Got Empire?

For the few of you who actually are uber cool enough to visit my blog, I had a few people ask about posting some of the lines from Empire Records. Ask and ye shall receive!!  If you haven’t seen it, you should!

Oh Rexy, you're soooooo sexy!!

No revealing clothing….

Oh come now, with your never ending flesh mutilating tattoo’s and your neo nazi hair do

The boys are sure to come a runnin

Mitchell's the man Joe.

And the man calls all the shots

Damn the man.

Let me explain it to you. Mitchell's the man. I'm the idiot. You're the screw-up. And we're all losers. Welcome to music town.

That is so clever. I swear you get smarter the shorter your skirt gets.

Attention Rex Manning fans, to your left you will notice a shoplifter being chased by night manager, Lucas. This young man will be caught, deep fried in a vat of hot oil and served to our first hundred customers. Just another tasty treat from the gang at Empire Records.

To the 'Extreme'.....

What is up rockers and rolla's!!? So it was a great weekend! Some highlights:

  • As the Mrs. and I were heading out to get a bite to eat, I was channel surfing (as I am programmed genetically to do). I stopped on 'Extreme Makeover' on ABC. My betrothed says to me without skipping a beat "why the hell are you watching 'The Crying Show'? I bust out laughing. She so pegged that right. Name one time when you watched that show and didn't shed a tear because little Johnny now has a play room where before he shared it with like 17 other siblings and 3 dogs and 6 cats. There is nothing really 'extreme' about it, is there?
  • 3 words; ANDREW DICE F-ING CLAY!! OOOOHHHHHHHHHHHhhhh. He is BACK! VH1 has his show of his return to the comedy world. He is a bit eccentric...a bit neurotic.....but he is ALL DICE, ALL THE TIME!
  • I caught a flick suggested to me from an awesome friend at work. She and I have great conversations about music and movies and what is 'in' and what is 'out'. I think one day we had an email banter over some great lines in Empire Records. 1) most people wouldn't even know that movie let alone 2) be able to rattle off great lines from that flick. Rent this movie now. But I digress. The movie she suggested was Waiting. Think of all the TGI Mc Friday Chevy's-esque places. This is a very smart humorous peek into that world. Another must see. There WILL be a test.
  • Said friend above will give me a load of shit about this next bit, but I am anxiously awaiting the release of Tommy Shaw (Styx/Damn Yankees) and Jack Blades (Night Ranger/Damn Yankees) called Influence. They give a tip of the chapeau to many great artists and songs. It reminds me of going to see Jeff and Mark play. They did a great version of "Your Move" by Yes on VH1.
  • and the BEST news for me this weekend; I am getting the voiceover website going full steam ahead! check it out here
All right....so all in all...a great weekend! Hope you reading this enjoy it as much as I like venting. Leave comments and tell your friends to log in. I will also try to get the podcast updated more regularly.......and last.....this comic is for the Drunk Drama Queen and the Queen of Dysfunction:

Be good.....Dad and Mom....love you guys.....

I was looking over my posts and realized that I haven’t ever mentioned not only 2 of my best pals from back home, but 2 of the most talented musicians EVER ANYWHERE (yes, deal with that James Blunt and your “I’m Beautiful” hack of a song).

The Cartwright Brothers are an enigma. They are something you can’t really fully explain, it has to be experienced. It is kind of like going to a Rocky Horror Picture Show movie viewing in a theater. You could try to describe the experience to your best friend, but it would NEVER compare to being there.
Think of some of the best music in your life from the 70’s till now; throw in a smattering of Monty Python, throw in a rubber chicken for good measure and you have some of the best entertainment for an evening you will ever encounter.

This link is the main page to the Cartwright website.

There is a lot of great stuff to learn about them.

Next is a link to Mark’s personal message (updated irregularly). Okoboji Iowa is one of the best places in the Midwest to spend a summer. When the guys were playing there and I was working with my mother and step father in their photography business, we had many a drunken night. One night in particular, Mark and I were walking around with a 12-pack and talking about life and women. We got back to the hotel room they were staying in and said “I really want you to hear the rough mix of the new CD we are putting out. Let me know what you think”. What transpired over the next 60 or so minutes was (as I put it before) something you just can’t describe. I have been listening to Mark’s work for almost 20 years now. I said without a doubt in my mind that this was some of his (and Jeff’s) best work. Peaking At Life quickly became a motto that I held close to my heart.
“Eternal Spring”: “…as hope springs eternal, we hope for eternal spring”;
“If These Walls Could Talk”: …..as I drive by and think of all that could be said…I simply break a smile and shake my head”
“I’m Alright”: “..so I put a tape in, from 1985, turn it up, kick on back and I’m feelin’ fine”
“Back In My Head”: “….the words ‘I love you’ were scawled over the Jackson, her signature where the face had been, and just like I had years before, I gambled her, away again”
(can you feel the goose bumps on my arm yet??)

Check em out…check out ITunes……and for heaven’s sake “HELL NO I AIN’T EATIN THOSE PEAS!”

The Grammy's!

So for the past few years, I have given my point of view on the Grammy's and did a mass spam of my email address book. The good thing about blogs is now I can just send the LINK to my address book and make them come see it. *insert laughter and golf applause here*

Kicking off the night was the first appearance of the reunion of the Police! They did "Roxanne" (shocker) and it was actually pretty damn good! They did a little remix on the second verse, but all in all, damn good. I was curious though as to how or who was doing the background vocals. The drummer, Stewart Copeland, was flailing about and the guitar player, Andy Summers (I think) looked like he was trying to sing, but not belting it out like you would think for such background vocals. Oh, and another thing.....Sting / Neal Patrick Harris ... separated at birth?

Jamie Foxx kicked the night off and was damn funny making fun of some "black" walk he did on national TV....

Tony Bennett and Stevie Wonder won the first award. Was it just me, or did Tony totally forget he should have helped the blind dude to the stage? Stevie was reaching out for him and he was hand shaking the front row...oh...by the way, Tony, nice sponsor name drop....(rolls my eyes)

Joan Baez's intro of the Dixie Chicks was a snooze fest, but they themselves did pretty well.

After commercial break, they show the stage. No intro music, no B-movie actress introduction, just the little 5'3" Minnesota legend; PRINCE!! After his Super Bowl appearance (which was stellar!) his stock has had to go up 150%.

Black Eyed Peas: what the F was on your right ear, dude!?

Mary J Blige kickin ass last night.....and still looking as elegant and hot as ever EVEN with sporting tats!

Justin Timberlake.....what the hell was up with the "Justin Hand Cam"?

P!NK was lookin smokin hot....

Second appearance of Stevie Wonder.......wouldn't it be funny if he whipped his glasses off and yelled out APRIL FOOL'S !!!

For the love of Zeus's Lightning Bolts, someone destroy ALL copies of James Blunts "You're Beautiful".....

Shakira was shakin'.....her hips were just on fire!! Axl Rose is somewhere holed up in the Hollywood hills putting the "finishes" on the long awaited Chinese Democracy CD for the last 10 years or so saying "Hey she does the snake dance better than I do!"

Much love and respect to the D Chicks.....but how did they get song of the year!? I haven't even heard the song before....does that qualify for song of the year?

Ludacris thanks pretty much everyone on the planet but my grandmother and me.....and what the F is up with the "shout out" to Oprah and Bill O'Reilly??

about then I was nodding off, so I will have to check TIVO sometime and see if there were any other good moments!.....

DDQ: OMG

Glad to be back……hope everyone is doing well……….and be warned….my mother has asked to see my blog……NOTHING good can come from that I think….LOL

Sunday!

Went to a matinée this afternoon with the Mrs Lucas.... Smokin' Aces. Holy Shite! What a kick ass flick. It started in 3rd gear and by the time the big ending came, you were going 170 mph while you were wondering how the hell you got there with no pants on! Jeremy Piven and the whole cast including *mrrowww* Alicia Keys did a fantastic job! We were trying to figure out when the last time we were in a theater was. For the life of me, I could only think of the last Star Wars that came out was the last time.

Afterwards, we went to a frame shop and I got a little shadow box. I have been wanting to display some of the music memorabilia I have amassed over the years and it seemed like a nice time to get that project started.

Then came the decision for dinner. It was a no brainer; H O O T E R S!!!
20 wings to go. Came home and watched the Apprentice and finished packing for Round 2 of the California Tour!!

Currently rockin' the funk outta me is Devil's Got A New Disguise by Aerosmith. Typer and Perry are just too good together:

"If you see Kay, tell her I love her
She did me in but I'll recover
She said love was her desire
All that she touched she set on fire
She was so diss - I couldn't slay her
She blew a kiss - I threw the dagger"

ok y'all.....be good this week.......

Almost home!

Wow...this trip has been a rollercoaster ride. I haven't seen this many hotel rooms since Julia Roberts was trying to bone Richard Gere for a week *oh shut up and laugh, you know that was funny*
I need to get a map of california and plot out all the places I was this week and will be next week. All joking aside, the hotels have been AMAZING *with the exception of Ontario where I got hammered and was having difficulty finding my room*
Grey's Anatomy was awesome tonight.....
I can't wait to get some of my pictures posted.........

well well.....the front line managers are in the bar downstairs and insist I have some drinks with them......

....wish me luck.......LOL

California Tour 2007

So here I am. Day 2 of the big work meetings. Last night was a night to drink with the big boys. I had more than quite a few cocktails....some red beers, some Johnnie Walker & soda's, something with orange Absolute and lemondade...some kamikazee's and a shot of Cabo Wabo (thanks Denis). Needless to say, the stomach was just a bit on the queezy side (even when waking up @ 3am to try to remember where I was). The main highlight of the night? Meeting Phil Angeledis (the guy who ran against Arnold for Govenor) I got a cell phone pic with him too....

So now I am in Carlsbad. The Hilton here is right on the ocean. When I get a chance, I will try to post one here.....

Time for some room service and bed early tonight.....

(I can't take full credit........D.L.Roth actually said it first.....but I like it)

The Conclusion of…. 7 Hours In San Francisco…..

It was about 3:00pm now. The line had grown to at least 100-150 people. They were all lined up behind Scott and his friend, me, and the Paul Stanley Paradise gals. The rain was at a definite torrential downpour status at this point. I held my umbrella as best as I could to try to accommodate those around me.

About now, a large econo-van pulling a trailer pulls up. A bunch of musician-types step out and begin unloading. PSParadise girl #2 says to me “That is Slunt! They are the opening band!” I had heard of them from my cousin Rob who is an equally big KISS fan as I am. He said that they would NOT disappoint. The collective group of us all “whoooo-hoooooo” and “rock on’d” them as they brought their equipment into the venue. The excitement had just hit a new peak….and was fixing to hit another about 45 minutes later.

A large black not-quite-limousine and not-quite-sedan pulls up. VIRGIN1 was the license plate. It had to be from Virgin Records which led us to believe that, YES, the man of the day was in there. A smattering of us, me included, sort of made our way to the car. Which in just of quick of time, we were “politely persuaded” to move back. 2 bodyguards/doormen approached the back door with an umbrella. The door opened and Paul got out, did a quick wave to us and was whisked away to the load in door of the Fillmore. The time was getting close!

A small group of radio contest winners were escorted inside for the aforementioned meet and greet. They must have been treated to sound check because we heard the opening chords of “Got To Choose” (one of my all time favorite songs by KISS). We also heard “Deuce” and “Live to Win”. The group returns to the line. They are all excited and say that this is going to be a great show. (no shit Sherlock? Thanks for the preview)

7:00. Seven hours of waiting has now come down to this. The 4-5 door staff waves us in. The rush of people was amazing. It was comparable to a big arena show. I get to the doors after a dead sprint while trying to keep my footing on the rain-soaked street. The first 2 yahoo’s are at the first two entry ways. I spot the third spot, free and open. The PSParadise gals are stopping behind the 2 yahoo’s. I grab one and say “Come here, it is going to be faster” How do I know this? Because one of them was going to try to bring in a bottle and I KNEW it would hinder them getting in very fast! As I start to present my ticket; I think to myself that not a chance do I want to lug around that umbrella. So I see a homeless guy (different that the 2 we had encountered earlier) and say “yo man…you need this more than I do” and toss it his way and I am in!

This place has such an air of history about it. But, no time to dwell on the past…..I am on a mission! I make my way up the stairs and through some of the turns. I make my way to the “auditorium” (it reminded me of someone very cool and hip had decorated in deep reds and blacks, a high school auditorium for a prom. That SOUNDS so not as cool as it was. If I come up with a better analogy, I will let you know). My Puma-like skills of speed and direction get me to the best freakin’ spot in the room. DEAD Center in front of Paul Stanley’s microphone!! I can’t believe it. I revert to the excitement I got when I was a kid getting my KISS Alive II album.

The crowd is relatively subdued. No major pushing or clawing for spots at the front. It was me in dead center. To my left, a big guy and his girlfriend. To my right, 2 guys who had already been in when I got there. Neither sets of people looked as if they were giving up any room from their vantage point; nor neither was I.

The front-of-stage crew was an eclectic group. You had the biker, turned family man who was doing this as some extra pocket change. You had this short man of what I believe was Mexican descent; but I wasn’t sure. I was more surprised that a guy that looked like he was 16 and wasn’t very menacing at all, was doing as a front of stage worker. Then there was the “Lifer”. He had been doing shows for about 20 some years, and he had the looks to show it. Lots of miles of road looked like it had come across his face. I am not being judgmental, mind you, good reader, just a vehicle of information upon which I am your driver. He had done a Tool show the night before, then was scheduled to do GWAR the next night after this show. “I hate doing their shows. They always have their stage animal spew gunk on me” If you don’t know what GWAR is, look it up or follow this link

It’s 8:05; Time to rock *tip of the hat to Drew* …

Bottom line, SLUNT rocks! GET A LOAD OF THIS is a great CD, but ONE NIGHT STAND is a really kickin’ CD. You should check it out. The drummer was a MADMAN. At the end of their far too short set, I looked at him and yelled “you kick ass duuuuuude” and he came over and tossed me a drumstick…..how cool am I!!!?

The stage hands strip the stage and begin to set up for Paul’s set. We wait with antici……..pation.
The house lights go down and the crowd erupts! Like just some ordinary schmoe off the street, he walks onto the stage. No huge fanfare, no intro music or effects, no pyro; nothing. Just him and the band. Explaining as such he come up to the front and I immediately get a high five (as well as others of us in front) “This is going to be a lot of fun! No big deal just you me and the music” The Crowd cheers in approval and delight!

My vantage point:

The band is tight. They are the house band for the show ROCKSTAR: Supernova. They held very true to the music. Paul was in great form. Vocals were right on the money. You would never have guessed he had been doing this the better part of 30 years.

2 – 3 songs into the show, Paul stops to talk to the crowd. From behind me, just short of shoulder height, I hear at the top of her lungs, in a voice shrill to none I had heard in my life I hear “Pauuuuuuuuuuulllllllllllll STaaaaaaaaaaaannnleyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy” this is repeated about 5-10 times during his in-between song patter. To give you a better point of view, find a chalkboard, put a microphone next to it and set it at 10 then rake your nails over it. It is then, you will get about 1/100th of the shrillness of this youngling. How do you just DO that? Ignoring what the MAN on STAGE with the microphone is saying!!? I just don’t get it.

He worked the stage with the magic only he knows how. KISS has always been about the SHOW; and Paul Stanley was always the catalyst. Pyro or not, he just knows how to make a rock show an experience.

I wish I could recall the song, but at one point he is working the crowd and I reach my hand up to high five him again. He looks and gives a smile and a head nod and slaps me some skin…..and in my hand appears a coveted guitar pic! I am stoked. This was just too cool.

The show runs for a solid 2 hours I am guessing. And the set list is awesome:

Live To Win
Hide Your Heart
A Million To One
Got To Choose
Move On
Bulletproof
Tonight, You Belong To Me
Lick It Up
Wouldn’t You Like To Know Me
Magic Touch
I Still Love You
Strutter
Every Time I See You Around
Do You Love Me
I Want You
Love Gun
Lift
Detroit Rock City
Goodbye

After the encore or Goodbye, house lights come up and I resist the urge to throttle the screaming munchkin. I make my way to the lobby (my first chance to go to the bathroom since long before 7 pm) The merchandise booth is slammin’, but I see the members of Slunt there, beers and Jack Daniels in hand signing stuff and taking pictures. I get myself a T shirt and both Slunt CDs. The drummer and lead singer are right there and tell me how kick ass of me it is to get the CDs. I have them all sign and ask the lead singer, Jhen, for a picture. I fumble like a little school boy on his first date to try to get my cell phone to work. I am nervous and it takes 3 tries to finally end up with this:

I make my way to the parking garage again and get in the SUV. I sigh and smile. I crank up the Paul Stanley CD and turn on the GPS on the cell phone and back to Sacramento I go..........

Part Deux - 7 Hours in San Francisco

here is part 2.......I have my notes and realize this is getting long.....but its a look back on a journey that was very cool to me......I hope I can finish this in one more posting......

~Lucas~

So...where were we.....ahh yes.....the Neanderthal doorman......so I oblige him. Albeit in a bit of reluctance, but I did not want to risk getting bounced before even getting in the door. I see two guys sitting on the ledge of the post office. Smoking cigarettes and just looking like they have had no sign of shower in about a solid 2 weeks....the smell? PUNGENT! "You guys in line?" I ask. "Yep, this is it...we are the first ones here" ....and so the waiting begins. By now, the weather is REALLY not wanting to cooperate, and I am so very thankful for my purchase of the umbrella. Scott, the 'dirtier' of the two, is talkative. He has a story and a 'been there, done that' for every scenario we speak of....with the exception of this is his first concert.....EVER. Yes, you read that correctly....E V E R. Now I have been to my fair share of concerts, but to make this one your first, I do give him a little credit for that.
As we are sitting there, he makes little comments about the passing women. "Dude, look at that dog" etc etc.......and I was about one blond away from saying "Yo DUDE....you look like a retarded Skreech with a crack problem" (would that be redundant?...LOL) He's bagging on women and saying the most disparaging of things and yet he looks like a half a nit wit himself...I will never understand people.....
After a bit of time, 2 young gals come up and ask if this is the line. I say "Yep...Welcome aboard!" The 5 of us get to talking and I come to find out that these two gals are DIE HARD fans. I mean, I really think of myself as a true fan, but when these 2 came up, I was truly bested. Why you ask? Apparently, this is the 6th show they had seen on this tour.....yes...6 shows....
11/05/06Mount Clemens, MIEmerald Theatre
11/06/06Chicago, ILHouse Of Blues
11/07/06Minneapolis, MNMyth
11/10/06Seattle, WAShowbox
11/11/06Portland, ORAladdin Theater
11/13/06San Francisco, CAThe Fillmore
They had gone to ALL of these shows.....one of them being from Michigan. I can't recall where the other one flew in from to meet her. But they packed up their things and had gotten flights and hotels and had been following him. I asked once how they bankrolled this and they were kind of aloof and standoffish so I just let it go. After some more talking (which we had a LOT of time to do) they let us know that they run a Paul Stanley Fanzine called Paul Stanley's Paradise
They knew of people that subscribed to the fanzine who were planning on coming to this show too.....a few all the way from friggin JAPAN! They both were great to meet and made the time there more bearable....considering I could only handle Scott's machismo for so long.

Many onlookers stopped and asked what show we were waiting for. And for everyone of them, we had people saying how nuts we were to be waiting in the rain. We even had some wisdom from some panhandlers. One, insisted that he was going to die tomorrow and needed to find out about his SSI check....and another, clad in a leather jacket, no shirt, his glasses were on upside down and just soaked. He stood and laughed out loud to himself or his voices in his head or something.....Scott....offers his a cigarette.....*head swivel on a stick moment for me* I am like...What the F*&# are you doing?....Leather jacket guy hangs around for about 30 minutes just talking nonsense.

"But what did you do for a bathroom" you may be asking yourself by now. Well...by the good graces of god and indoor plumbing....a Starbucks around the block from us, was happy to oblige with our plight. We, in turn, gave them a little business by getting coffee and hot chocolate to keep warm.

The time rolls and there is a very good full line starting to form behind us. The main PSParadise gal leans over to me at one point and says, "you realize this will be pandemonium when they start to let us in?" I smile and reply "Oh ya...don't ya love it!" In actuality, I knew it was going to suck balls, but the adrenaline charge you get by just being there will surpass anything.

For those of you who fly Southwest...

A mother and her very young son were flying Southwest Airlines from Dallas to Chicago.
The little boy (who had been looking out the window) turned to his mother and asked, "If big dogs have baby dogs, and big cats have baby cats, why don't big airplanes have baby airplanes?"
The mother (who couldn't think of an answer) told her son to ask the stewardess.

So the boy went down the aisle and asked the stewardess.

The stewardess, who was very busy at the time, smiled and said,
"Did your Mom tell you to ask me?
"The boy said, "yes she did."
"Well then, you go and tell your mother that there are no baby airplanes because Southwest always pulls out on time. Have your Mom explain that to you."

My Weekend....

Was spent very relaxing ... for the most part. Ashley and I went to Fry's and to IKEA. At Fry's, I saw this kid playing Guitar Hero 2. He couldn't have been more than 14 or 15 years old. He was playing Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas; and just SHREDDING it! (Dad, "shredding" is a good term.....) I sat just in awe. I couldn't believe how cool it was that this kid was just tearin' into this song like he had written it himself. By the time he finished, a small crowd of about 5-6 of us had gathered. When he finished, cheers and light applause was met with instant embarrassment on his part. Another young, would-be axe-master, takes the guitar and the first kid grabs his jacket and kind of steps back to just blend in.
I step up to him, because I am nosey like that, and say "Wow, man! Kick ass Job! Had you heard of that song before you played it on Guitar Hero?"
"No" he said rather coyly, but with a bit of a smile. "I come here and just kind of play"
I said "You come here just to play this?" "yeah" he replied.

Now I know that you have to be thinking some of the same things I did. 1)Just comes to an Electronic store to play video games? and 2)I really miss arcades!

I didn't want to go all "you know latch key kids are blah blah blah blah" I just rolled with it and said "Are there a lot of good songs on this one?" "yeah....I like that one, Surrender, and Strutter".....do you hear that KISS fans....STRUTTER......so friggin cool that this kid was turning his back on the pre programmed poppashango K-Fed crap for REAL F-ing ROCK!
[side note....the new GH2 comes with the ability to play with a buddy which leads me to.....]

The other kid that had played after (and sucked monkey balls at it) relinquished and left. I say to him "wanna try a co-op song?", the Wayward Son says "sure!" and excitement takes over any shyness that had taken over him" I say to him "which one you wanna play" He ponders for a moment....."Surrender" [a song by Cheap Trick, dad]. I say cool......I offer to play bass (I do not tell him of my musical background or the fact I have worked in bands, wrote my own music, listened to Cheap Trick even before he was just a thought in the backseat of his daddy's car on prom night....or....that I had played Guitar Hero 1 already)

You get to pick your character as well as the guitar he uses and the skill level. I pick Lars Umlaut. A KISS-esque character (naturally). As we get to the skill level menu, he says to me "just choose easy. It will be good for you to start out with."
I said to him that I like this song and I will give it a shot on Medium setting.

And we crank out Surrender like it was our bitch! What a great time I had....

The feeling I get, when a young person experiences and digs some of that great music that inspired me to love music, is such a powerful feeling.......

As Ashley and I drove off, I almost had a little tear in my eye.......I thought to myself that I hoped someone loves him and gives him all the opportunity in the world to pursue music if that is his choice. Or video game maker....or butcher, baker or candle stick maker......and that not too many of his days were spent riding his bike to the electronics store.....

7 Hours in San Francisco - A Trilogy

As many of you may or may not know, the KISS army is a strong and devoted group. We have lived, breathed and grown with them. For most, this started off early in our childhood. Many of us have the Paul Lynde Halloween special to thank for this. I can still remember how glued to the TV I was when it came on. Not ONLY was Pinky Tuscadero from Happy Days on it….but these 4 Comic Book/Super Hero/Gods of Thunder. My friends and I talked about it the whole day the next day. We bought the albums, the notebooks, the lunch pails. We played the pinball games and painted our faces and knew every song. (I think you get the idea at this point)

So, upon hearing of Paul Stanley solo tour to support his new CD Live To Win, I instantaneously knew I had to go. I missed the first time he went out on his own due to living in the middle of nowhere.

I also took into account that this would be much like a typical pilgrimage to a KISS show. It is important for you as a reader of this blog (who may not know what this entails) to understand the thinking of a KISS Army soldier: You have to be there early to get the best seat/standing area. If you are in the back or the nosebleed sections, you are hereby stripped of all your KISS Army stripes and you are now outcast to the bowels of hell and become a John Tesh fan.

This show, being at The Fillmore in San Francisco (a legendary place in its own right), it would be a small 1,200 or so seat/capacity venue. This means, a possible autograph possibility! So, I busted out my Paul Stanley Signature Model Washburn guitar as well as a special silver sharpie I had used for my first encounter with the band.

And with that preface, let me take you through my journey that was :

San Francisco in the Rain for 7 Hours.

I took the day off from work. I knew that I could, in no way, try to get there after work. The traffic is too horrendous in the city. I was trying to pace myself to leave Sacramento around 10AM. I felt more than confidant that this was going to put me on the tail end of all (if any) traffic. I was right. Smooth sailing the whole way. With the exception of one crucial factor; The Weather! I had checked the weather starting Friday for the weekend/Monday forecast. Sure enough, Murphy’s Law gives your hero a swift kick in the dick and laughs about it; RAIN for Monday!! Rain on Sunday? No. Rain on Tuesday? Oh Heavens No! Rain on the Monday that I have to stand in line for one of the iconic events of a KISS Army members life? Oh it has to be!

And so it begins……..

I do want to take this moment to thank whomever invented the GPS system and more so to the person who thought “hey, lets make GPS accessible by cell phone so directionally-challenged people like Wade can get to point A to point B with as little miles driven in vain as possible” They are pretty damn accurate. It takes a little getting used to “letting go of the boat” (a term that I coined for my wife with her semi fear of swimming one night…that’s a whole entirely different blog entry ~ but a tear-induced moment) and letting the GPS dictate where you should go.

Preceding my arrival to The City by the Bay, I did some research as to where I would park as well as possible eating places so I can make my plan of attack! Right on the cusp of Japanese Town, there was a parking garage for a theater 8 complex. This was going to be home base. I arrive around noon. Just in enough time to hear on 107.7 The Bone (ironic, don’t you think ~ LOL), that Paul Stanley was going to be a “guest DJ” and they were going to be giving away Meet & Greet passes. So, I decided that since The Fillmore was a mere block away, I would go there, scope out if a line had started yet, and then listen and try to win the M&G pass. First thing, always being first, I had to equip myself with an umbrella. As luck would have it, right across the street was a 99¢ store and after a minor investment of about $7.99, I make my way to The Fillmore. A quick recon of the area showed no ascertainable lines. The big 18-wheeler was in place but nobody was loading in any equipment. I spot the first of a myriad of security/doorman/Neanderthals. A short, burly black man in multi-layered garb and a nonchalant tunic points to a flag pole in the front of the post office located about a half a block away. “We are going to have the line start there” he grunts. I chuckle thinking ‘oh lookit the little gruntling being funny’. “No, really, where do we line up?” I ask again not wanting him to mess up my very crucial schedule. In the classic response he looks at me deadpan. 10-15 seconds pass, but they may have well been 10-15 minutes, “Over by the flag pole in front of the post office”. I smile and say “oh….ok….”

(at this point…..I have to leave you with a cliff hanger……I want to post this and get some work done….stay tuned and spread the word to your friends about my blog!)

o0oooohh ohhh What's That Smell.......

This is pretty damn cool. When I first heard that KISS was going to come out with a "fragrance" I feared that it would be something cheesy (not literally....lol....that would just be gross) and cheap and smelled of Old Spice meets a pile of old leather pants that Gene Simmons wore. But, surprisingly and thankfully, it is not any of these.....it is a really good smell. The KISS For Her smells just as good (of course your Hero had to buy both gift sets....My OCD for KISS items in full effect) and Ashley likes it a lot (how nice to have her not want to stop nuzzling in my neck because "DAMN, honey, you smell SOOOoooo good")

More on KISS ~ I think I am going to the Paul Stanley show!...but, like Paul, I am going solo...(LOL....I crack my happy ass up)....

Paul Stanley of KISS has a new solo CD out as well as starting his new tour. He is playing at The Fillmore in San Francisco (a kick ass venue with a ton of history in the music scene). I am wanting to go, but it's on a Monday (blaaahhh!). So we will see........

Musings of a comedy fan......

Can someone please....PLEASE....for the love of humanity.....explain how this is now one of the most top rated shows out there?? Oh, I know....maybe because it is actually SMART television and people can't handle that? It's made by the same people as The West Wing for the love of Thor's Hammer!

Is your Ipod telling you what to listen to?

When you turn your Ipod on "Random" or the "Shuffle" setting....is it TRUELY playing songs at random or is it programming you the programmer??
Click here for an interesting insight!

Last 5 Songs played (on random) on The Bone's 'pod:

Touch, Peel, and Stand - Days of the New
Decadence Dance - Extreme
You Better, You Bet - The Who
Use Me - Hootie and the Blowfish
Slutsy Tipsy - Love/Hate

Well....I have to now tell you, my dear readers, of a new addiction.....you can keep your crack, you can keep your pot, you can keep your David Hasselhoff records....I am hooked on Grey's Anatomy (now with clickable goodness).
I feel odd....I mean...it is more of a chick show.....but the drama is the thing is what keeps bringing me back like the proverbial moth to the flame. I mean hell....first there is Izzy...who fell in love with a patient (that ended up dying) and is now perplexed because (in so many ways) she killed him by cutting the wires to his heart machine....then there is the intern who wanted to straddle her surgeon of a boyfriend, only to have the mother walk in (his not hers). Then there is George who is a MESS....can't decide what he wants, even though he has Dr Torres who worships the ground he walks on....(In my opinion, Dr Torres is a hottie that ABC very much under uses on the show!!). Then you have Meredith.....and her whiney attitude......who can't pick between McDreamy and McVet.....
If you get a chance...tune in....it's on Thursday's! You will get hooked!

Sake To Me

I told Drunk Drama Queen that I was just going to put up a picture and give the punch line....but the story is ENTIRELY too funny not to tell:

It was DDQ's surprise birthday party. Now, my dear reader, as you may or may not know, your hero is not a big fan of Japanese food. However, since it is her favorite, I went thinking I should be able to find SOMETHING I could possibly stomach. Zen Toro in downtown Sacramento.....I highly reccomend it!

We make our way to the resturant, and the waitress, Megan, says the most beautiful words in the English Language: "Can I get you a cocktail, Mr Lucas?" (ok ok, so she didn't say Mr Lucas....but I was feeling very retro just now).... I perk up and say "why, yes you can Megan!" As I begin to go through my mental rolodex of tasty beverage concoctions, I see across the way, a couple drinking out of what seems to be a pine wood box. I exclaim with a childish curiousity "What is THAT!?" Megan says "Sho Chiku Bai Sake, Mr Lucas" (I'm on a roll, just flow with Me won't you). I say, "well bring Me a bottle! I want to drink out of that box too!!"

So Megan proceeds to pour yours truely a box of sake......and boys and girls, kats and kittens, rockers and ALL the mutha truckin rolla's.......this is the SHIZNET!!....I could not believe how good this was.....

Now...as in most resturants, the wait staff wear a uniform of sorts.....and by about my 3.5 helping of sake, I am in RARE form....I think I made some reference to her mom gettin jiggy with it or something to that effect.....whence, from the corner of My eye....I a uniform....."MEGAN!!" I cry out......and to my shigrin (how cool of a word is shigrin anyway?!) a strapping young MALE lad appraoches [insert the screaching tire brakes sound effect please]. Now....read My words very carefully on this next chunk o' fun:

"HEY! You're not Megan! You know how I KNOW you're not Megan....Cuz I'm drinkin SAKE"

Thankfully, I was not asked to leave the resturant.....so....here's to you My fellow co-horts in cocktail consumption........CHEERS

Obsess Much?

I have an undying love of music…..all styles…..all genre’s……this is no mystery to those of you who know your faithful Superhero…..

I also fancy myself a music trivia aficionado.

Lately for the last few months, there is a bit of trivia I just can’t shake…

I can’t find the answer anywhere and it is one of those OCD moments where I just HAVE to know…..

Let me bring you into my hell:

The pre-chorus in the song “I’m Alright” (featured in the film classic, Caddyshack) by Kenny Loggins, there is a line

          Gotta catch you later
No, no, cannonball it right away

It is on the “cannonball it right away” line that I SWEAR it is Eddie Money singing. Do not mistake this….when I say I obsess over this…I am talking listening to it on my Ipod over and over…rewinding to the :47 second mark and listening to it…..hands over headphones….eyes closed…..trying to see if there are any Eddie Money hints that I have not caught yet……….

In the words of Dave Buttatinsky from The Full Monty:

“…….and how was YOUR day?”

going The Full Monty....

Hello you rockin' web surfers......thanks for swingin on by.....it's not everyday that I have a full blown (no pun intended) picture of a group of saucy guys in uniform....but I DO have a purpose (and not the "special purpose" you are thinking of ya perv)....the opening night for the show The Full Monty is this weekend. The show is really good plus the theater is one of the best in Northern California. Click the picture to head on over and check it out.......

Rehearsals have been good but tech week has been HELL.......and lets REALLY not get started as far as the aromatic buffet that is the mens dressing room....I am not sure what more than 3 hours of sleep is like yet, but hope to find out soon.....

Also coming up when I have time, my reviews of the REO Speedwagon, Journey, and Def Leppard shows I have been to.....good reading folks, you won't want to miss out!!

What's up......went to an audition tonight for a small part in a show called The Full Monty. It's a funny musical about a bunch of out of work guys who decide to undertake a SPECIAL job to make ends meet. I think the audition went well and am looking forward to working in a show again. Maybe it will take my mind off of shit that is bothering Me

Ok Ok, I know it’s been a while since my last posting. A LOT has gone on in these last few weeks. Most notably, my trip back to Yankton, South Dakota and my 20 year high school reunion. Yes, I said it loud and proud: 20 friggin years ago, I finally walked out the hallowed walls of YHS thinking I was going to have the world by its collective cojones! Through the many years of working in a weekend warrior band (and that alone is another tale to tell) or odd jobs and then finally landing the bartending/manager/stripper hire-er all the way to me in beautiful Sacramento, CA…..what a loooong strange trip it’s been!

First off, let’s discuss the flight. Your fearless and weary hero was picked up by shuttle bus at 4:15AM. Took a little puddle jumper to San Fran in which I board one of THE largest planes I have EVER been on (2 seats, then aisle, then 5 seats, aisle, then 2 seats). Well the writing on the wall should have been the pilot asking for our “kind patience” when we were forced to sit on the tarmac for almost an hour for equipment issues. NEVER a good sign. We finally are on our way to Denver, CO…..I am lucky to get a pillow and watch a little of King Kong on the personal TV the seats were equipped with. With the late departure, and the fact the gate I needed to get to was on the other side of the concourse, I missed my connecting flight into Omaha. The attendant says she will TRY to put me on the next flight. I explain in the most gracious of ways, that it was not my fault that I was late, that their airline held us up and I was SURE she would find in her heart that she would help; she was less than happy. Perhaps it was the tone of my disdain and frustration. Or the fact that there were approximately 20 people behind me that was scheduled to get on that very flight (which we missed by about 15 minutes I am later to be told….oh joy). The United Airlines “stand-by lottery” was in my favor and I am chosen to make the very next flight. When landing in Omaha, I go to see if my luggage was there waiting for me…..and I waited…and looked…and waited some more…….no luggage for me. I go to the United Airline baggage claim. They can’t see where it has been scanned since Frisco and asked if I would like them to Fed Ex it to me when it comes in (it is Thursday afternoon and I would be getting it at the EARLIEST, Monday). I naturally didn’t even PONDER my decision and said “NO! I want my bag NOW before I leave for my week long trip”. I was compensated with a $7 voucher to any of the eateries of my choice in the Sky Lounge (Taco Bell, KFC, or Pizza Hut…be still my aching arteries). After my food, a few cocktails at the bar, playing some of my PSP games, and trying to sleep fetal-position on a chair, I get my bag; 3 hours later. I get to my rental car (which was actually a bright part of my trip….a souped up Dodge Charger that just INSISTED that I went at least 80 mph all the time in it……) and head to Yankton.

Now, as some of you may know, my friend and usual partner in crime, Drew, is living in Sioux City with his beautiful wife and I am pretty sure my daughter and son (ok ok …so MAYBE they are his….or so he says) as well as his Chef du jour / nephew, Jason. We decide to meet at a neutral place so that he can guide me the rest of the way. I was in luck and found a Hardee’s restaurant (one of my first real jobs was slinging burgers at a Hardee’s in Yankton) and was able to enjoy a Mushroom and Swiss burger which was just short of awesome! Getting to the Casa de Drew, I get to meet the many pets as well as see my great kids, Emily and Drew Jr. and am pleased to see that Drew Sr. has Jason trained to get us cocktails at a moment’s notice. Ally is weary and looped on her meds, but pleasant and charming as always. Emily and lil Drew are trying their best to keep my OCD in check by keeping something interesting on the TV in the background of our talk.

After 2 Irish Whiskey’s on the rocks, I am heading to Yankton. One more hour til “home”. Now, I am not going to exactly Yankton. My parents moved to a little (I think they would call it a suburb) town called Tabor. Czech capital of the Midwest I think. Don’t blink my faithful reader, for you may miss the booming town of 100 or so people.

Friday comes with a call on my cell phone. It is Drew. His father passed away. I can’t even fathom the feelings and emotions Drew was going through and said that as soon as I could get out of the festivities tonight, I would be there for him. That afternoon, I go to the Cockatoo to see what the talent was for the weekend and general catching up with people I knew…..which accounted to two people; Mick and Linda R. Mick and I go way back….very close friends who have shared many cocktails, stories and adventures together. Linda, however, was a fellow graduate from ’86. She was not planning on going to any of the festivities. Pishaw I say! “Follow me to the bar” I bellow, and begin to talk with her about why she should go! I order up a Southern Comfort shot with a 7 back and she has a beer. We laugh at the various stories we come up with regarding our legacy in our high school years. I tell her that for the life of me, I can’t recall her talking very much to me or in class or anything, but that I am having a great time catching up on memories we have never made together.

It’s now about 6pm and the evening’s festivities kick off around 9pm. I should get home to get cleaned up. After primping and preening as best as I can, I make my way to the Hugh Glass Bar. I am greeted by Jeff Reynolds. A long lost fellow drummer from the high school band days. He and his wife are well and looking forward to a drink. We enter the bar to find that the A/C is out and pretty close to standing room only. We find a bar in the middle of the fray and order a round of drinks. Usually beer will chill you out well, but my medium cold Heineken is not doing the trick. We notice that we can recognize quite a few faces, but can’t put a name to them. This makes for the occasional odd moment of “hey……you……ummm….what’s up?” followed by the moment or 2 of odd silence/weirdness. Then, it was almost comical about how the conversations would go.

        Dialogue of a Reunion

The same things will be spoken by both parties: Hey, how’s it going? You look great! Where are you at now?              What are you doing there? Any kids? Great! Good to see ya, Bye!

It was as if I wanted to just write everything on a 3x5 card and hand out to people. Jaded? Possibly. I actually did have a really good time. It was just one of those things that make ya go hmmmmmmmmm………..

One of the first to REALLY recognize me was Dave Gannon . I recall just being so stoked because his blog was so well put together and yell out to him “BEST BLOG ON THE NET GOES TO DAVE GANNON!” He snaps a great picture of the moment:

(thanks to DG for the picture)

I jumped ahead of myself…this happened on Saturday.

But I want to get this published and will finish more of the adventure later.

Ok, I know that this may seem weird. Personally, I put 90% blame on my ipod….the other 10% on me because I sat here like a dweeb and listened to both intro’s just short of 50 times:

Take the song Iron Maiden by Iron Maiden….listen to the intro riff …..then IMMEDIATELY listen to the intro riff in Burning for You by Blue Öyster Cult

Which will lead me to my thoughts on the “shuffle” function on IPods in a later rant……

24 days left!

This is so cool!! 24 days left, then I get to go home. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love California and ALL that it has given me, but always in my heart, Yankton is HOME.

The itinerary looks full with ample time to visit with those that probably didn’t give me the time of day when I was in high school. Not that it matters…but it does in some ways….but being in a movie (although it was a small, grunt-filled role) will be a good point of interest. Also, the KISS tattoo….

going to Matt's today.....poker and BBQ.......should be a blast!!

Matt's poker party was great. We went and picked up my friend Jason to give him a ride. Jason and Matt and I all act in the murder mystery dinner theater together. Matt's place is pretty cool. In fact, Matt and his father were on American Inventor together for this device kind of like a bidet [spelling] that attaches to your toilet.
The poker tournament went really well....I lasted a long time.....but eventually, Jason and Ashley split the $400 1st place prize.

I am pretty tired today...we didn't get in til 2:30...........
